Travis taking Austin and Betsy to the Military Daddy/Daughter Ball
I need to stop taking so long in between blog posts, way too much happens and I can't remember it all.  The last weekend in March Travis had a single solider retreat in Denver.  We came with him since it included two nights in a hotel room and all meals.  That first day was crazy, first of all that morning Travis had  a prayer breakfast for his troop and spouses.  He put me in charge of all the food and the music, so I spent a lot of time preparing, and the night before had spent hours making 100 ham/egg/cheese sliders.  We woke up early Friday morning and took all of the food over to the chapel on post.  I got all the food set up, and starting heating up the sliders, a few other ladies showed up, and helped me with the food.  Then I made sure the sound system was set up, and starting playing prelude music.  Instead of 100 people show up, we only had about 30, but it turned out really nice, everyone loved the food, and even though I was really nervous, I did fine singing the special musical number "let him heal your heart" except for forgetting to turn on my mike, and having to stop and restart.  We ended up having a lot of food leftover, and gave a lot to the soldiers, but we still ended up taking a lot of food home.  So Travis went to finish getting everything ready for the retreat, while I went home, and helped the kids get everything packed and loaded into the car.  We got ready and met Travis and his soldiers over by his work, after he got everyone situated we drove up to Denver.  There was another chaplain family there, as well as one other family that was looking to become a chaplain.  So after dropping all the husbands off for their training, the other moms and I drove over to a park and let the kids play for a while.  All together we had 14 kids between the three of us.  The kids were having fun, except for Betsy who fell shortly after arriving and her back was hurting.  She laid down on a bench, while I rubbed her back with deep blue for a long time.  One of the other mom's little boy (age 2) wasn't feeling good, and had a fever, so she was holding him the whole time.  After the park, we drove to go check into the hotel and unfortunately hit rush hour traffic, and what should have been a 10 minute drive, took 45 minutes in stop and go traffic, we finally got checked into the hotel after I spent a good 30 minutes figuring everything out at the front desk for our group, meanwhile all 14 kids are running around the lobby, and one of the kids even got in the elevator all by himself and ended up taking a ride, fortunately another family got on his elevator and brought him back down to the lobby for us. After getting our rooms figured out we took all the kids down to the pool, except for Joseph who forgot his swimsuit, (well actually he doesn't currently own one, because he outgrew all of his clothes recently) and Betsy who needed to lay down still due to her back hurting.  So we were all down at the pool, and the kids were having a great time, when the other mom's little boy, the one with the fever, started having a seizure.  He had never had a seizure before, and it was pretty scary for the mom.  After his seizure stopped she called the dr. who told her to bring him into the hospital, so she left her other four kids with us and left.  The other mom helped her get everything she needed and stuff for her others kids, while I watched 11(10 of whom were 8 and under) kids in the pool, thankfully Austin is a great helper, and helped me watch them all.  The other mom and I got all the kids out of the pool and dressed.  I called Travis' assistant and had them bring dinner to the other mom and her kids, and took mine back to the training center to eat dinner.  Starting when we were at the pool my stomach was hurting, so as soon as Travis was ready to leave, we drove back to the hotel,,and I layed down while Malachi proceeded to put everything he could find into the toilet, including all of his toys, and the only pair of shoes we brought for him.  Thankfully the mom with the sick little boy made it back to the hotel, and said the her little boy should be just fine, Travis helped give him a priesthood blessing.  Caleb had taken a late nap in the car ride to get dinner and Travis from the training area, so he didn't want to go to sleep until almost midnight.  So I stayed up with him, while everyone else slept, and discovered once again that I'm so glad we don't have cable T.V.  Travis left early Saturday morning to go to the temple, I was going to go with him, but after my late night couldn't drag myself out of bed at 5am.  So the kids and I all had a great breakfast in the lobby area, until at the end, when everyone was done eating except for Samuel and I.  Austin and Joseph were taking everyone else back to the room.  Apparently Samuel looked up from his plate of food just in time to see Malachi walk into the elevator, he didn't realize that all the other kids were in there with him, and thought that he was there by himself.  He started yelling and screaming and freaking out because he thought that Malachi was in the elevator all by himself.  I tried to calm him down, but to no avail, he was making such a big scene.  I finally sat down on the ground, and pulled him into my lap, and told him to calm down, and promised him that Joseph, Austin, Betsy, and Caleb were all with Malachi, and had my permission to go back to the room.  He finally calmed down enough to go back and finish our breakfast, where I studiously avoided eye contact with anyone else in the room.  We finished our breakfast and went back to the room, where he ran to hug Malachi and told him how happy he was to see him, and that he was okay.  Travis made it back and we all drove back to Dave and Busters which was where the training was at.  Travis managed to get some free play cards for the arcade area, so the kids played there until lunchtime, where we had breakfast for lunch.  After lunch, Travis was done with training so he stayed with the kids in the theater room while I went to the temple.  It was really nice and peaceful to go to the temple, after the chaos of the last couple days.  After I was done, we went back to the hotel and took the kids swimming again.  After swimming was over, we went out to dinner at a place called cherry cricket.  Both Malachi and Caleb fell asleep, and even when we were seated and sat Caleb down at his seat, he quickly fell asleep sitting there waiting for his food.  The food was yummy, but my stomach once again started hurting when we were at the pool, so we went back to the hotel after dinner, and just watched t.v.  The next morning, we got everything all packed up and ready to go, but Travis had to meet with a solider in the hospital in Denver, so he dropped us off at a park.  It took longer then we thought, and we had to go back to the hotel, because I left Travis' clothes in our closet.  So we ended up missing most of church.  But all in all, it was a very adventurous weekend.  My Mom came into town on Monday, I tried to get the house clean, but just didn't have enough time, especially since I took Malachi and Caleb to the park to feed the ducks some stale bread.  The next morning after we dropped all the other kids off at school, we went hiking around the red rock area and had a great time, it was a beautiful morning.  My mom helped me with the kids, helped with some yard work and cleaning.  She also wasn't feeling very well, but she still works hard anyway.  Malachi also had a cold and wasn't feeling very well, so he wouldn't go to her, which was sad, because he normally so sweet and cute.  For April Fool's Day I got up really early, because I had a special breakfast planned, and Travis had to leave by 5;45am.  I made breakfast pancakes that were decorated to look like each person, using strawberries, apples, yogurt, blueberries, papaya, bacon, cucumbers, and raspberries.  It was fun to make them, and the kids all liked them, it definitely seemed to confuse Malachi though.  I didn't do anything for lunch, but for dinner my mom made us "fried eggs" (made out of yogurt and peaches) and gelatinous milk, and "chocolate chip cookies" made out of mashed potatoes and black beans.  She made the food while we went to Samuel's soccer practice, it was really windy, so it wasn't very enjoyable.  Travis had to work late, until almost midnight that night.  The next night was Caleb's first soccer practice, I think I mentioned in my last post, that I am crazy and volunteered to coach Caleb's team.  My mom wanted to take us out to dinner, so we went to a place called Sarge's Grill.  It was a cool place, the kids and I ordered what they called the breakfast challenge to share.  It was three huge pancakes (each one the size of a large pizza) 6 eggs, 6 bacon, and 6 sausage.  It was so much food, we could only eat one and a half pancakes, I wish I would have taken a picture of it.  We had to hurry and eat, because my soccer practice was starting soon, and I was supposed to be there early.  Travis left to take Joseph his choir concert, and my mom dropped of Caleb and I, it was so windy, that we could barely see anything, and it had gotten really cold.  Apparently everyone else was smart and cancelled their practices.  It was so cold and windy the kids were crying and not very happy.  We managed to practice for a few minutes, and then sent everyone home, it was just too cold and it was so windy it was blowing the little kids over.  Travis had the weekend off which was nice.  We took my mom to the airport on Friday, we were sad to see her go, but really enjoyed having her here.  I was helping with the ward Easter egg hunt, so we hurried to the church after dropping my mom off at the airport, and I got to help hide the eggs, while Travis got to pick up dead squirrels with a stick and throw them in the dumpster.  The kids loved finding the Easter eggs, and had a great time.  Saturday was General Conference, but we had two soccer games that morning so I missed most of it.  Samuel did a great job at his game, and was the only one on his team to come close to making a goal (the goalie caught it).  Caleb had a great time at his game, and the kids did really well, for not really having a practice yet.  Caleb is so tiny compared to all the other kids that he can just squeeze between them all and get to the ball and kick it.  At one point during the game he yelled to me that he had to "pee" so I quickly sent in a sub for him, and took him to the bathroom.  All the other parents thought he was pretty cute.  In between conference sessions we had our own Easter Egg Hunt.  Travis and I filled up the eggs with Chuck-e-Cheese tokens, coins, and a little candy, and hid them all in the back yard.  The kids had a great time finding them and loved getting coins and tokens.  On Easter we had our Easter Egg Roll in between conference sessions.  It was a lot of fun as usual, with Caleb ending up with the final egg and won!  I realized after boiling all the eggs, we didn't need to color them, because they were naturally colorful due to being our chicken eggs.  We had a yummy Easter dinner that night, and enjoyed relaxing and playing games.  Travis was off on Monday so we worked on our front yard some more and cleaned out the rest of the rose beds, it was a lot of work, we also brought in stones for a wall, and mulch to go around the trees and roses.  On Wednesday I also got some strawberries from a lady in the ward and planted a bunch our front flower bed area.  I couldn't plant them in the backyard because the chickens eat them.  Friday I took dinner to three other families, it was a little crazy, but felt good to help other people.  Yesterday we had two more soccer games and pictures.  I had all the kids with me except Joseph, so they were playing at the skate park area next to where we were taking team pictures, and Samuel fell and hit his chin on the concrete scraping his chin and under his lip, and almost biting through his lower lip.  He was crying and making a big scene, just like Samuel does.  So after the pictures, and kind of turned the practice over to my assistant coach so I could take care of him, I was able to get him ice from the concession stand, but he was whining so much about it hurting, I called Travis to come and get him, After taking him home to get him a real ice pack he came back at got his team pictures and played in his game.  That afternoon, Travis took Betsy and Austin to a Military Daddy/Daughter Ball, they had a great time, meeting "princesses" , watching a show, and riding in a horse drawn carriage.

So Much Snow!! Now finally Spring!

My Organ broke beyond repair, so in order to fit the organ into the trash, we pushed it out to the driveway, and the kids took turns smashing it apart with hammers, and axes.  They all had a great time, and even helped clean it all up and dump it in the trash when we were done.

Austin had taken Malachi outside to play in the snow, and when I looked outside Austin had drawn a heart in the snow for me, and she even helped Malachi draw a little one (Just to the left of where they are sitting)  So Sweet!

Austin at her trash modesty fashion show at Young Womens!

So for the two weeks (end of feb, beginning march)  we have had snow I think every day.  It is cold, and I'm really ready for spring.  So the weekend of the 27th we were supposed to go with Travis to do a retreat up in Breckenridge, Colorado.  It had been snowing a lot already, but we were going to ride up with Travis and the soldiers in the vans they were using.  We were supposed to meet Travis at work at 1pm in order to drive up with him, so I spent the whole morning, packing and cleaning and getting ready to go.  Austin, Caleb, Malachi, and I got everything in the car and drove over to pick up Joseph from school.  I had called the school to pull Joseph out of class and have him waiting for me, as we pulled into the parking lot of the school, Travis sent me a text saying the trip was cancelled due to the weather.  So, I had to call the school and tell them I no longer needed to pick up Joseph and to send him back to class, and then drive back home, and unload and unpack.  Needless to say, we were all quite disappointed.
So Austin turned 12 officially on the 25th!  I can't believe she is a young woman now, she is growing up so fast.  She is very responsible, and is looking forward to babysitting for other people.  She has been babysitting for me for over a year now, but I don't pay her very much.  I posted to the Relief Society Facebook page in our ward, that she would love to start babysitting, and she got her first babysitting job, and did AWESOME!!!  She got her temple recommend this past week, so that she can go and to baptisms for the dead at the temple.
Travis told me that since I did such a good job making breakfast for 30 people for the baby shower, that he was going to have me be in charge of the breakfast for 100 people at his prayer breakfast on the 27th of this month.  So I have been busy making up the menu, and getting a price quote ready so that Travis can request the funds.  So I went to Costco, and wrote everything down that I would buy, and figured out the total, only to find out that I can't use Costco because the funds are paid with a visa credit card, and Costco only accepts american express.  So instead I had to hurry and go over to Wal-mart, and do it all over again, because Travis needed to turn in the request form that day. Anyway, I probably go to Costco way too much, because, later that day, when I was taking Joseph to the church for an activity, Malachi kept saying "Mom.....Mom.....Mom..."  after I had said "what, or yes" a couple of times he would say "Costco (well it sounded more like Coco)" and then I would say, "we're not going to Costco, we're taking Joseph to the church, and then going home"  and that point Malachi would insistently say "Costco, Costco, Costco, Costco, Costco".  He would finally stop for a moment, and then start the whole thing over saying "Mom".  He did this the entire way to and from the church.  Such a silly boy, he definitely loves going to Costco with me, maybe it's the samples.
So I made pasta for the first time with my new pasta maker that I got for Christmas.  I made the dough, and then Caleb helped me roll the dough through the pasta maker.  We got it all rolled out and I set it on the counter to dry.  I left to pick up Betsy and Samuel from school, and Caleb stayed home with Austin.  When I got back, Caleb said "Mom!  Look at what I made for you"  while holding up a huge ball of dough.  He had grabbed all of the noodles we had just rolled out, and squished them all into a nice big ball.  I had to take a deep breath, then smiled and told him "thank you for the nice big ball, but now we need to turn it back into noodles again," so we once again rolled it all out into noodles, and let it dry.  It turned out yummy.
So one night Joseph was going up the stairs and Samuel just happened to throw a tube of chapstick down the stairs and somehow it ended up hitting Joseph right in the eye.  Poor kid, it hurt pretty bad, his pupil was a different size from his other eye, and it was really sensitive to light. after a while he went to sleep and we figured it would feel better in the morning.  Unfortunately, it did not feel better in the morning, so I got him a dr. appointment, for later that day to have it checked out.  But, for him to go to school, I quickly grabbed an old pair of black pants, and made Joseph a pirate patch!  I took him to school, where he quickly became known as patchy the pirate.  Later, I picked him up from school and took him to the dr., where the dr. determined that his eye was not seriously injured and would heal on it's own, so I took him back to school, and sure enough within a few days his eye was back to normal.  We did enjoy having Joseph as a pirate for a while though!
So finally we have gotten some warmer weather, one day it was 80 degrees, of course the next day the high was 40, and it snowed, but at least most of the days have gotten warmer.  One day we walked to the park and played for a little while.  Betsy decided to play a game where she would bury her shoes, and Malachi and Caleb would go on a treasure hunt and find them.  Well, when it was time to leave, Betsy couldn't find her shoes.  I had to teach piano lessons soon, so we quickly looked around for her shoes, after digging around for them for 10-15 minutes, we gave up.  We had to get home quickly now, so we put Betsy in the stroller, and Samuel pushed her home, while I carried Malachi and helped Caleb go fast.  We barely made it home in time for my piano lesson.  So the next week at school, her class walked to the park for a picnic lunch, and she ended up finding her lost shoe.  She was so happy to have her shoes reunited again!  Betsy has started going to Physical Therapy for her back, and has some exercises that she needs to do every day.  The Dr. said to still keep her form physical activity for at least another month, to let her bones heal.  She will also need to do these exercises for the rest of her life.
Austin is doing great in her online school, and has even done some babysitting during the day for a sister in the ward, and made some money.  Samuel brought home a note from his teacher the other day, saying how impressed she has been with his behavior at school for the past two weeks, and how well he is doing.  I was so happy, I made him a nice batch of sugar free fudge, which he loved.
We had a little fun for st. patricks day.  I made green eggs (made with spinach) and "bangers" (sausage) for breakfast.  Everyone loved it, and I even had to make an extra batch of the green eggs, they ate it up so fast.  For a snack we had popeye's ice cream (also made with spinach) and Irish stew, mashed potatoes and green smoothies for dinner.  I also made up a st. patricks day treasure hunt, where they had to search for the the clues, and each clue had a game or task to complete with it.  They loved it, we had to rush off to church activities, but it was still fun!
We had a family retreat that we did on Friday, at a nice place called La Foret north of Colorado Springs, it was in Black Forest so it was nice to be in the outdoors

Caleb riding his scooter down the snowy hill instead of sledding.
It has been a very eventful week, full of both good and bad.  We finished celebrating Caleb's birthday on Tuesday.  He asked for a cake with bacon, donuts, and strawberries, and that's also what he wanted for dinner, so that is what we had.  He loved it!  It was also the one dinner, that no one complained about.  He also opened up his presents from us, and Grandma and Grandpa Hardy.  He was so excited to get his presents, and loved them all!  Malachi was also happy that Caleb gave him his old scooter, since Caleb got a new one from G and G Hardy.  I can't believe my little Caleb is 4 years old already, it has gone by so fast.
So, on to the next big event.  We had a big snowstorm, and got lots of snow, and the next day it was sunny and in the 60s and a lot of the snow was melting, but we had enough still on our hill to go sledding, so while Samuel's ABA therapist was here on Wednesday we were all out sledding.  Austin and Samuel were fighting so I sent Austin inside, and then Malachi needed a diaper change so we went inside.  Then Samuel came running inside screaming that Betsy fell out of the tree, and since Samuel screams about everything, I didn't think it was a big deal, but when I walked out there and saw Betsy laying flat on the ground in the snow, and the therapist kneeling down next to her, I knew it was serious and ran over to Betsy.  Betsy was conscious and not crying, but she was just laying there.  The therapist explained that Betsy had fallen from about 15 feet high out of the tree backwards (Betsy said the branch she was on broke) almost doing a backwards somersault and hitting her head and back as she fell.  After a few minutes, Betsy said she was getting too cold, and I helped her up, and walked her into the house and layed her down on the couch. She said her back and upper back hurt a lot, and after checking her pupils and noticing they weren't quite acting normal, , I decided to take her to the emergency room.  I left Austin and Joseph in charge of the little kids, and took Betsy very carefully to the Emergency Room.  Betsy said it hurt too much to sit up or stand or walk, so I helped her lie down as much as possible in the car and waiting room.  Once they called her name to check her in, they started taking her vitals and finding out what happened.  Betsy threw up everywhere, and then they took us right back to a room (bypassing the probably 5-7 wait in the waiting room).  Betsy wanted the lights off, and layed flat on her back with her eyes closed whenever there wasn't a nurse or dr. in the room checking on her or talking to us.  The Dr.  came in and checked her out, and said she needed some CT scans of her head, neck, and back, and an ultrasound of her abdomen to check for internal bleeding.  After waiting a while they wheeled her to get her CT scans, and gave her an IV, and did lots of CT scans, including a contrast scan where they pumped her full of iodine through her IV, she didn't like that test, but was very cooperative.  Finally after about 45 minutes of taking different scans, they wheeled her back to the room, and then did the ultrasound.  Everything was normal, no internal bleeding.  After waiting a very long time, the Dr. came in and said that Betsy had received a mild concussion, and had 3 compression fractures to her vertebrae in her upper back.  He said I could take her home, but she needed to just lie down in bed, and do nothing so her brain and back could rest for the next two days, then bring her back in to her dr. to follow up.  So, by this time it was almost 8 o clock, we had been at the hospital about 6 hours.  We grabbed some food on the way home, Betsy didn't eat much, and I tucked her into bed with a dose of Tylenol for the pain. Betsy slept well that night, and just stayed in bed the whole day.  She didn't watch T.V., read books, or do anything.  She listened to an Audiobook for a while, before realizing she wasn't supposed to do that either.  Betsy really wanted to go to school for a little while, so she went to school for a little bit on friday, and then I took her to her Dr. Appointment.  Apparently, Samuel had told everyone at school that Betsy had brain damage and a broken back.  So, Betsy got a lot of attention at school.  At Betsy's Dr. appointment the Dr. said that she seemed to be doing well, but her muscles were extremely tight, and prescribed valium to give to her, if they wouldnt' loosen up.  He also said that the CT scan showed some air in her chest, where there wasn't supposed to be any, so we had to go and do a follow up x ray to see if the problem had gone away or not.  And since we haven't heard from the dr. I'm assuming the x ray was fine.  The Dr. also said Betsy will need some Physical Therapy to help her recover.  He also told her she can do her normal things, but be careful, and not do any physical exercise for a while.  She also needs to refrain from watching t.v., or playing video games for a few more days.  Betsy has been an excellent patient, she has been sweet and kind to those around her, has helped out any way she can, and has not complained once.
Saturday I was in charge of the food for a baby shower I was helping to plan, so I got up at 5am, after being sick all night, and started making food.  By 9am, I had everything ready, and took it all to the baby shower.  The food was all delicious and the baby shower went great.  There was a lot of leftovers, but the kids and Travis were very happy about that.  Next I made Austin's cake and we got ready for her party that night.  There was a huge snow storm predicted but so far, it had just been a little snow and slush.  Right before the guests were to arrive, it started snowing like crazy.  I think we got about 3 inches in 15 minutes.  As parents dropped off there kids we realized that we would need to end early, because roads were going to get bad fast.  It wasn't too bad, since the last two hours of the party was just going to be watching a movie, so they wouldn't' miss much.  Everyone made individual pizzas, and we had cake and ice cream, and opened presents.  Then the girls had to start leaving, it was still snowing like crazy.  All the girls and Austin had a great time at the party.  Unfortunately Betsy had a hard time, it was too loud, and too much stimulus, because she kept leaving the party to rest up in her room.  While everyone was watching the movie, I played cards with Betsy, so she wouldn't feel too bad.  Also Joseph hit her in the back earlier, so her back was hurting worse too.
It still hasn't stopped snowing, and church was cancelled today, so we all stayed home, and made a nice big fire in the fireplace.  We played lots of games with Betsy, since her back has been bothering her, and I've given her lots of little massages to help with her tight muscles, they are really tight, but I really don't want to give her valium.  Tomorrow school has already been cancelled, so we should have another fun snow day tomorrow!
